âI remember the fireworks,â said Alena. âThe rest isâ¦â She tried to think, tried to remember but the thoughts kept cycling. Rapid-fire successive recollectionsâthe guest list, her friends, and the fireworksâwith a flash every now and then of the ceremony, although these memories were gone quickly, rushed across her thoughts like watching a film on fast forward. A single frame among thousands.
She gripped her head in her hands, sitting on the edge of the bed on the ClairFieldâs third floor. Golem was in the bathroom, listening to her speak, door opened, apparently washing his hands with the sink turned on high. Tears pricked her eyes as she breathed heavily, trying to makes sense of her memories.
âProbably just stress, Alena,â Golem said from the bathroom.
She didnât hear him. âWhy canât I remember the past three days?â
âI told you before, youâve been sleeping. More than likely youâre sick from all the stress.â
She stood abruptly. âI donât believe you,â she hollered. âYouâre doing something to me, I know it. I feel it.â
âCâmon, Alena. What can I possibly be doing to you that youâre not aware of?â
âIf I knew, we wouldnât be having this conversation.â
Golem turned off the sink then stood in the door. âYouâre mad,â he told her. âAbsolutely raving mad.â
âLIAR!â she screamed then started pacing the room. Pounding footsteps across the carpet.
âLook at you,â observed Golem. Then with a passionate voice, âYouâve cracked, Alena. Ever since Bill Astor you havenât been the same.â
She stopped pacing. âBill?â she said as if to herself. âYou killed him. My Bill. My poor, poor Bill.â
âNo Alena,â Golem said. âWE killed Bill Astor.â
Alenaâs lips quivered. She thought she saw a grin on Golemâs lips. He walked to her.
âAnd not without cause. He would have killed youâ¦and me, if we hadnât fought back.â
He took her hands in his.
Golem said, âWe are in this together. Bound together by blood.â He moved his head side to side. His eyes narrowed. âI will carry you, my lady. You need not be concerned with anything regarding Bill Astor. This I promise until my dying day.â
She was captivated by his eyes, mesmerized, hypnotized. Her hands in his so smooth andâ¦like skin not marble. She regarded his hands and the healing wound on his right hand. From the wound protruded small black hairs. She ran her thumb over them, smooth like silk.
âWhatâs this?â she said. âYou,â she met his eyes. âTurning human? Flesh and bone?â Her eyes narrowed.
Golem pulled his hand free and stepped away holding his right hand to his chest. âIt is inevitable,â he told her. âIn time I will turnâ¦â He turned away.
âHow?â she said. âHow is that possible?â
He shrugged, his stare, she thought, captured by fear. âI donât know how, Alena. I am only aware of certain things.â
âLike what?â
âBorrowed time,â he told her. âArenât we all on borrowed time? Where your flesh will grow wrinkled and gray with age, mine will...Mine will meet a fate I do not wish to discuss.â He dropped his hands. âI will return to the ether as shall you.
