________

“I remember the fireworks,” said Alena. “The rest is…” She tried to think, tried to remember but the thoughts kept cycling. Rapid-fire successive recollections—the guest list, her friends, and the fireworks—with a flash every now and then of the ceremony, although these memories were gone quickly, rushed across her thoughts like watching a film on fast forward. A single frame among thousands.

She gripped her head in her hands, sitting on the edge of the bed on the ClairField’s third floor. Golem was in the bathroom, listening to her speak, door opened, apparently washing his hands with the sink turned on high. Tears pricked her eyes as she breathed heavily, trying to makes sense of her memories.

“Probably just stress, Alena,” Golem said from the bathroom.

She didn’t hear him. “Why can’t I remember the past three days?”

“I told you before, you’ve been sleeping. More than likely you’re sick from all the stress.”

She stood abruptly. “I don’t believe you,” she hollered. “You’re doing something to me, I know it. I feel it.”

“C’mon, Alena. What can I possibly be doing to you that you’re not aware of?”

“If I knew, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

Golem turned off the sink then stood in the door. “You’re mad,” he told her. “Absolutely raving mad.”

“LIAR!” she screamed then started pacing the room. Pounding footsteps across the carpet.

“Look at you,” observed Golem. Then with a passionate voice, “You’ve cracked, Alena. Ever since Bill Astor you haven’t been the same.”

She stopped pacing. “Bill?” she said as if to herself. “You killed him. My Bill. My poor, poor Bill.”

“No Alena,” Golem said. “WE killed Bill Astor.”

Alena’s lips quivered. She thought she saw a grin on Golem’s lips. He walked to her.

“And not without cause. He would have killed you…and me, if we hadn’t fought back.”

He took her hands in his.

Golem said, “We are in this together. Bound together by blood.” He moved his head side to side. His eyes narrowed. “I will carry you, my lady. You need not be concerned with anything regarding Bill Astor. This I promise until my dying day.”

She was captivated by his eyes, mesmerized, hypnotized. Her hands in his so smooth and…like skin not marble. She regarded his hands and the healing wound on his right hand. From the wound protruded small black hairs. She ran her thumb over them, smooth like silk.

“What’s this?” she said. “You,” she met his eyes. “Turning human? Flesh and bone?” Her eyes narrowed.

Golem pulled his hand free and stepped away holding his right hand to his chest. “It is inevitable,” he told her. “In time I will turn…” He turned away.

“How?” she said. “How is that possible?”

He shrugged, his stare, she thought, captured by fear. “I don’t know how, Alena. I am only aware of certain things.”

“Like what?”

“Borrowed time,” he told her. “Aren’t we all on borrowed time? Where your flesh will grow wrinkled and gray with age, mine will...Mine will meet a fate I do not wish to discuss.” He dropped his hands. “I will return to the ether as shall you.
